Patient Experience: Integrated care
The Department of Health commissioned the University of Oxford and Picker Institute Europe to develop a set of measures which can be
inserted into existing national collections to measure components of integrated care.
Using the 'narrative for person-centred coordinated care' with accompanying domains and “'I' statements” as a starting point,
the research team adopted a five phase approach involving an evidence review and focus groups and cognitive interviews with patients,
service users and carers.
The result, a recommended set of eighteen questions. A number of these items are considered to be usable for national indicator purposes.
With the addition of items from the set in national surveys it is hoped that providers and commissioners will be better able to identify,
explore and challenge poorly integrated care.
